Historic refuge for intellectuals, artists and the liberal-minded, the Village is known for its old world charm and gentle architectural scale. This is the neighborhood where New Yorkers go for walks along tree-lined streets of brownstones and pre-war apartment houses. From cheap eats to magnet restaurants, local favorites may accompany long waits that can reward with a palate pay-off.
WALKSEE
Central to New York University, the 1895 Beaux-Arts structure commemorates the centennial of President George Washington's inauguration.
A former 1877 courthouse in Victorian Gothic design with towers, turrets and gables.
CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION
Fifth Ave. at W. 10th St.

1841 English gothic Revial desing by architect Richard Upjohn.
75 1/2 BEDFORD STREET
At one time home to famed poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, this is the narrowest house in the city and dates to 1873.
WANDERBUY
Greenwich Village and the West Village, often referred to interchangeably, have evolved into separate shopping identities largely focused along Bleecker Street. Between 8th Avenue & Christopher Street the charming shops have become a sort of mini-Madison Avenue of high-end branded boutiques. Between 7th and 6th Avenues are old world specialty food retailers and heading east to Laguardia Place, touristy cafes, bars and fast food are the mainstay. Other pockets of unique retailers line Greenwich Avenue by Seventh Avenue and Hudson Street by Charles Street.

Chef Jody Williams made her mark (she's migrated to nearby restaurant MORANDI) with this seasonal-centric ingredient-focused Italian menu. The food is rustic at heart but refined in its preparation. The decor is sleekly sophisticated while being warmly inviting. Though done tastefully, opt out of the dungeon-like feel of the small dining room on the lower level.
